Antifreeze Warning

anti freezeThis is the time of year when many people are using chemicals, like antifreeze, in their automobiles. Due to the increased usage of such products, this is unfortunately also the time of year when the GBHS and other Animal Welfare organizations receive phone calls about antifreeze poisoning. Automotive products such as gasoline, oil and antifreeze should be stored in areas that are inaccessible to your pets. As little as one teaspoon of antifreeze can be deadly to a cat; less than one tablespoon can be lethal to a 20-pound dog. You can help make a difference for the animals by following some simple advice given by the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center:

  • Check your driveway and under your car regularly for leaks.
  • Always clean up spills immediately.
  • Store containers securely away from children and pets.
  • Never allow your pets near your vehicle when you are changing antifreeze.
  • Some antifreeze/coolants, such as Prestone - Low Tox and Sierra, are made with propylene glycol, which is less toxic to pets and safer to use around them.
If you suspect that an animal, either yours, a neighbors, or a stray, has been poisoned please call your local veterinarian ASAP! If the incident is after regular office hours call the Emergency Animal Clinic nearest you! Please visit the ASPCA Poison Control What To Do For A Poisoned Animal webpage for more useful information on how to prepare for animal emergency of this type.
